Italy is quite a mountainous country, and that is what gives it its beautiful landscape. The Apenino Mountains runs through the middle of Italy and is sometimes called the backbone or spine of Italy. There are about 58million people in Italy. There is a big problem with illegal immigration in Italy because it has such a big coastline. The attitude here in Italy is. Don’t fight it, just relax and let it go. I will just absorb the fact that I am in this ancient country. Italy is about 2300yrs old and sure it will come with its wrinkles, the buildings are looking tired and run down, because everything is so old. The legend goes, that the poppies in the field were all white, but have now all been tainted red, because of all the bloodshed in the wars.
We saw the Monte Casino Monastery which was completely destroyed in 1944. The battle lasted from 4.01.1944-24.05.1944. 55 thousand Italians died here, 20 thousand Germans as well many thousands of South Africans, New Zealanders, Polish, Indians, as the battle continued to occupy this monastery.
Everything is ‘Bella’ Beautiful, nothing is bad, its just different! There are tunnels everywhere, the Italians are great engineers, they never go around the mountains, they simply go through them!. As it was we were stuck in a 2km tunnel in Naples, because there was some demonstration going on. One of the ladies had extreme fear of being stuck in a tunnel, and her fear came true. Luckily I had my bottle of lavender at hand, and gave her a tissue to sniff at, but she was crying and panicking. We got through eventually about 2 hours later.
When we got to the hotel we found out that we did have an illegal passenger. When we stopped off for lunch, we recognized a caravan car also stopping for lunch, and it must have been then that the person swapped to our bus under Neath the engine compartment, it was one of our passengers that saw him crawl out and run away…well, he is probably in Naples by now!
