14.05.2011 - Split-Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea coast positioned at the terminal end of the Isthmus of Dubrovnik. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations on the Adriatic, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva county. In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
The prosperity of the city of Dubrovnik has always been based on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages, as the Republic of Ragusa, also known as a Maritime Republic (together with Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa, Venice and other Italian cities), it became the only eastern Adriatic city-state to rival Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries. Although demilitarised in the 1970s with the intent of forever protecting it from war devastation, in 1991, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, it was besieged by Serb-Montenegrin forces for 7 months and heavily damaged by shelling.

I also can say I walked the 'City Wall',they rise straight from the cliffs that once upon a time were part of yet another island of the Adriatic. it was really a supurb relaxing day. After walking the City wall, we all caught a boat, and had a lovely 'grappa' brandy as starters, apparantly they all drink that, even in the early mornings. We had some grilled snapper on the BBQ and salad. In the evening a few of the tour group went for a walk to typical mediteranian fish dinner overlooking the adriatic sea.

Getting ready to go through 'ALBANIA' with an escourt....its so bad we actually getting a packed lunch made for us, we should be in the city of Tiranna tomorrow night - Greece here we come!!!!

14.05.2011 - Split-Dubrovnik

We had a guided tour through Salona which was an ancient Illyrian Delmati city in the first millennium BC The Greeks had set up an emporion (marketplace) there. After the conquest by the Romans, Salona became the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. When the Roman Emperor Diocletian retired, he erected a monumental palace nearby; this massive structure, known as Diocletian's Palace, became the core of the modern city of Split. In present times Salona (or Salon) is situated near today's town of Solin (near Split).\Salona was largely destroyed in the invasions of the Avars and Slavs first in 614.

We then spent a few hours walking through Split, and ancient castle ford as well, too much history to try and bore you with, the pictures all will tell a story.
